The Guy Who Sings About Everything

Matt Farley has written over 20,000 songs. I’m trying to listen to all of them. So far I'm at 49.66%

Jump to any section here, or continue below to read up on what this project is about.

Recently while listening to the Weird Work Podcast, I learned of Matt Farley – the guy who sings about everything. He really does sing about everything: he has over 20,000 songs. I didn’t believe it at first, but he confirmed it with me yesterday on the phone. The guy ANSWERS his phone if you call him at (603) 644-0048

He gave out his phone number on the podcast and so I figured why not text him. He replied promptly so I called him up and he’s hilarious!

So I checked his music out a little bit more. Found Happy Birthday songs for 3 out of 4 of my kid’s names! I texted him that he only missed one of my kids, so he promised to work her name into his current effort: Name Poop Songs. Yes. Poop songs by name.

Then I asked him how long it would take to listen to all of his material. As of today (08/16/2019) he said it would take around 20 days to cover all of it. 20 days of continual listening. (476 hours to be exact)

So, naturally: Challenge Accepted.

Originally I was going to create this page so anyone could login with their Spotify account and see how much of his stuff they’ve listened to, but it seems Spotify only publishes the most recent 50 or so tracks. So until Spotify makes this information public for any account, I’ve decided to turn this into a personal project with two main goals:

    1. See if I can get the play history and compare it to his entire collection and thereby validate which tracks I’ve listened to.
      • It looks like I can track play history. Go here to connect your Spotify to Last.fm and then check out this documentation on the Last.fm web services api. Then I hooked up my recent play history and did some cool Spotify API work to index all of his artist, albums and tracks.
    2. See if I can actually listen to all of it.

Check out what I've listened to so far:

08-21-19  09:49 – It’s too bad he’s not from Chicago. I would die if he had a ton of Cubs player songs.
08-21-19 09:50 – HOLY MOLEY HE HAS CUBS SONGS
08-22-19 12:06 – “I’m saving the poop songs until I can’t handle any more name songs.” <– Words I never thought I would say out loud.
08-22-19 12:08 – In the January 1st – Dec 31st songs, Matt mentions April Fools, Independence Day and Halloween, but doesn’t mention Christmas.
08-25-19 14:07 – Several of the songs from Jobs Songs and Games & Sports mention lobotomies.
08-27-19 16:11 – Matt holds a really long note in Hot Potato Is a Fun Game

08-27-19 12:30 – In Brain Inside My Head (The Brain Song) Matt acknowledges his brain is what helps him write these songs
08-27-19 13:07 – While singing about Sternum, Matt accidentally says “Stermun” in Sternum, Yeah Yeah, Sternum at 1:12
08-28-19 07:12 – On Happy Birthday George, Matt spells out the name G-E-O-R-G-E
08-28-19 08:17 – This is the greatest thing since sliced bread
08-28-19 08:29 – I, too believe that dead birds are wonderful things, and when I’m also able to kill two of them with just one stone, I also feel like I’ve accomplished something! (Killing Two Birds With One Stone)
08-28-19 12:16 – Finally, a song about 6 and 1/2 Dozen the Other
08-28-19 12:57 – In Electric Razor, Matt says he is a “Modern Man”. Why yes, you are a motern man!
08-28-19 13:10 – In Hair Gel Song, Matt says his hair “has a nice smell and he likes it well”, otherwise he wouldn’t “spend this long singing about gel in this stupid song”.
08-28-19 13:28 – If you have a broom but don’t have a dust pan, yes, you are a total idiot.
08-28-19 13:43 – Song About Rubber Gloves (The Rubber Glove Song) is my favorite so far:

08-28-19 17:38 – Ordering Pizza With Extra Cheese reveals the secret for how to know you’re really getting extra cheese or not.
08-29-19 08:03 – The melody in the background of In Stuff That Happens – Roommate Drank My Milk Again! could easily have been an NES game soundtrack. So cool!
08-29-19 11:40 – In Stuff That Happens – Ball in the Neighbor’s Yard, I thought the lyrics were “Born in the Neighbor’s Yard”
08-30-19 10:43 – I think Matt is glad to be done singing 100 songs on The Super Fun Birthday Song Sensation! because he does a funny high note at the end of Happy Birthday Olivia
08-30-19 14:17 –
I wonder why Happy Birthday Shizuku is in the middle of a bunch of popular names on Happy Happy Happy Birthday
09-03-19 07:29 –
In Animal Poop Songs – Moo Moo Poo Poo: Cow Poop!  Matt first uses the word “manure” in a poop song, but in Animal Poop Songs – Cow Say “Moo.” Cow Go Poo., there is no mention of the word “manure”, even though both songs talk about fertilizer.
The Toilet Bowl Cleaners – Halloween Poop Costume – Matt finally mentions Manure
09-16-19 14:02 – In This Album Is Pretty Good – Maurice Flitcroft Song, Matt gets very introspective at 1:27 and calls himself a superstar music dude.
09-18-19 08:32 – Matt seems to contradict himself in these two songs. In All I Want Is You he says all he wants is you, but also a little bit of food and water ever day. But in All I Want Is You he says he doesn’t want anything at all in the whole wide world except you.
09-18-19 15:18 –  In Nice Man Sings Song for the People Songs Yes Now Cover Up! – Black Dog – Matt sings the word “Very” 15 times in a row.

09-18-19 22:14 –  In Nice Man Sings Song for the People Songs Yes Now Cover Up! – I’m Fixing a Hole (It Is Hard Work) – Matt sings about being a piano player and a musician man. He says he should be making songs about fixing holes instead of actually fixing holes. His wife says if he was any good at his music career, he’d make enough money to pay a real person to fix the hole, but his music stinks and he’s a loser and she hates him.
09-19-19 13:32 – In The People Love This Guy Because He Makes Great Songs Like These Ones – Roughly Fifty Different Ways to Say Goodbye – Matt mentions himself in the first person when he says he’s trying to come up with more ways to say goodbye (:30)

09-23-19 15:15 – Matt really needs to clear his throat at the end of My Name is Payton (and I’m awesome)
09-24-19 08:56 – In all of the I am Awesome songs, the first reference to backup singers is “listen to what my backup singers have to say about the subject”, but in My Name Is Isiah (And I’m Awesome), Matt says “listen to what my backup singer has to say about the subject”.
09-19-19 13:27 – I feel a parallel with this project and the lyrics around 1:11 in Not Sure What to Make of This – Noah Takes a Picture of Himself Daily (Self-Obsessed)
09-23-19 13:27 – Palm Coast Girls – Matt absolutely demolishes this one! “Floooooooooooooorida!!!!!” is my new ear worm.

09-26-19 08:11 – This happened once and we had to rent a carpet cleaner: The Dog Is Running Around With a Dirty Diaper in Its Mouth
09-26-19 11:05 – In Happy Birthday Vol. 2 – Happy Birthday Joe – before the background singers start singing “There’s no better way”, Matt normally sings the person’s name a few times and that’s it, but in this song, he sings “Joe Joe Joe Joe, What do you know?”
09-26-19 11:40 – This happens again in Happy Birthday Kate – Matt says “Kate, Kate, Kate, I think it’s great that it’s your birthday, Kate”

10-02-19 07:27 – In all of the Best Friend in the World songs, Matt tells the person they are his best friend “in the whole wide world.” But in Ryan, You are My Best Friend, he says “in the whole wide wide wide world”.
10-02-19 07:49 – Sid is also Matt’s best friend “in the whole wide wide wide world”.
10-03-19 07:26 – Roy and Cathy – I See Something No One Else Sees – has a very nice piano start.
10-03-19 22:23 – I think I hear one of Matt’s kids in Union City, Georgia at :58 (Yep)
10-03-19 22:35 – Matt sounds like Mr. Ed at the end of this one: The Guy Who Sings Songs About Cities & Towns – Acworth Song for All
10-08-19 09:50 – In The Odd Man Who Sings About Poop, Puke and Pee – The Jordan Poop Song, Matt repeats “Jordan poop” so many times it starts sounding like “Poop, Jordan”

09-03-19 12:33 – Update on the above. I believe EVERY song in this collection has a sound that resembles a phone ringing at 1:00. You can hear it a little better on the randomly selected Fun With Names Songs, Vol. 7 – The Andre Song – you be the judge.
09-03-19 13:10 –  Update 2 on the above. In each of these songs there’s a beat that happens three times. :10: 35 and 1:00 – in the first two you can hear nothing but music. But at 1:00 it sounds like a phone. Or I’m losing my mind.
09-12-19 12:41 –  Update 3 on the above. There’s a Karaoke version of The Name Songs where you can hear the phone ringing more clearly at 1:01
09-03-19 23:53 – In the other room, my wife is watching a T.V. show that has an old phone that sounds just like Matt’s phone o_0
09-18-19 09:04 – Nice Man Sings Song for the People Songs Yes Now Cover Up! – Fireworks – phone rings at 1:15 and again at 1:20. The song ends with the phone ringing alone. It’s very nice.

In Vol.1 – The Heath Song, Matt says “that’s Heath”, another non-name word moment.
In Vol.1 – The Jamie Song, Matt says a non-name word, “Yea-ah!” at :50
In Vol.1 – The June Song, Matt pronounces the name June strangely at “:32”
In Vol 2. – There are three songs grouped together, The Margie Song, The Homer Song and The Bart Song. I see what he did there.
In Vol. 16 There are two other character songs next to each other: The Mario Song and The Luigi Song.

In Vol. 10 and In Vol 13. The Cookie Song is duplicated
In Vol 4. – The Latoya Song, Matt fumbles over the pronunciation of “Latoyla” and the song ends abruptly at :33 instead of the typical 1:16.

Lyrics to Congratulations on Writing Your 19,000th Song!

You’ve done it, oh yeah.
You’ve written 19,000 songs.
Congratulations.
That’s really impressive. Oh oh oh.
How did you manage to do that?
Did it take you a long time?
Are your songs all good, or are some of them really terrible? Oh Oh Oh Whoah Oh.
Regardless, I’m really impressed that you’ve been able to continually produce so many songs. Oh yes.
Congratulations on making 19,000 songs.
Now you gotta keep on going making more and more oh.
Congratulations oh oh oh oh you did it.
Does it make you upset when people make comments and say things like,
“Big deal, it’s all quantity over quality.”
How does that make you feel?
Well I happen to have listened to all of your 19,000 songs
and sure some of them are not too good,
but I mean, even if you only have 1% of them that are really fantastic,
that’s way more fantastic songs than just about any one else in the whole wide world.
And I would say that you’re more like at like 2 or 3% oh yeah!
Yeah you’ve written 19,000 songs.
I understand you and I’m proud of you.
Now get to work and make another 19,000 songs.

Lyrics to You’ve Written Your 20,000th Song! Congratulations!

You’ve done it.
You’ve written 20,000 songs
and released them for all the world to listen to.
Oh yeah. You’ve done it.
You’ve written 20,000 songs.
You’re such a talented musician. Oh yeah.
And I know some people hear about how you’ve written 20,000 songs
and they say things like,
“Well they can’t possibly be good”
And they say stuff about quality vs quantity
And they belittle all the hard work that you’ve put into this project
But I understand
I’ve listened to all of your 20,000 songs
And I will tell you right now because it’s true
So many of your songs are all time classic songs,
and it’s a shame that most people have not listened to them
Your music is remarkable
You’ve worked really hard at continually producting it
and now you’ve reached 20,000 oh yeah
You’re like a musical savant or something, I don’t know
It must be so wonderful now that you’ve written 20,000 songs (laughs) oh yes.
You’ve released 20,000 songs
Now on to 20,000 and one.

Lyrics to Congratulations on Being an Unappreciated Musical Genius

Congratulations on being a musical genius
who is totally unappreciated
You are so great
at writing great songs
and making great albums
all of the time
And hardly anybody recognizes
how incredibly talented you are
And lots of people just write you off
as some kind of novelty writing hack
Genius is rarely recognized during the lifetime of the genius
So, take a little bit of solace, take a little bit of solace in that
Oh oh oh
And at least I recognize
That you are so incredibly great
at making great songs oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
I’ve listened to a lot of your songs
and I am always blown away
by how good they are
you are such a great writer
and such a great performer
and I don’t understand why noone pays any attention to you
Sure you get articles written about you
but they’re always just the same articles about
how you’ve figured out a way to trick the (laughs) system
and make money with terrible music
They’re all just writing you off as some kind of spammer or whatever
Meanwhile
You are
The most inventive songwriter I have seen in a generation
Where do you come up with all his amazing stuff?
You are a master of melody
and a master of chord progression
and a master of lyrics
and a master of just being awesome
And noone seems to notice
your best songs are the ones that get listened to the least
Oh oh oh oh
Meanwhile,
The dumb silly songs that you write and have a laugh about
Are the songs that earn you money
But they also earn you detractors
Who say that you are no good
And you’re like
“Nah, I just I mean that that was just a fun little song,
but I also wrote, you know, good songs too,
quote unquote better songs, but uh
you know, just cuz I wrote songs that are silly and funny and popular
doesn’t mean the songs that I write when I’m not being silly and funny,
that those songs aren’t good”
But nobody cares to give you a chance.
But hey what are you gonna do?
We’re all gonna be dead one day either way.

Songs where do we really need two of these?

Observations from Prom Songs

There are six “Play This Song For Her” albums. Each with 100 songs. That’s 600 songs inviting a girl to the prom.
Also there are two more albums with 100 songs each, sung by Matt’s wife! That’s 800 songs total inviting people to the prom.

Matt normally sings “You’re so wonderful, you’re the best. I want to pose for a picture in my tux next to you in your lovely dress.” But in Grammy, Will You Go To The Prom With Me? the words are “I’ve been rejected by tons of girls and I don’t like any of the others, and so now as a last resort, I’m inviting my own grandmother.”
In Play This Song for Her, Vol. 1 – Bryn, Will You Go to the Prom With Me? (The first of the two Bryn/Brynn songs) – at the very end you can hear a pretty loud chair squeak.
There is a lot of breathing in on these songs. I guess that’s to be expected for Prom Songs.
Matt’s wife normally sings “You’re so wonderful, you’re the best. Won’t you pose for a picture in your tux next to me in my lovely dress?” But in Dad, Will You Go to the Prom With Me?, the words are “Some might say it’s desperate, some might say it’s bad, but I don’t wanna go to the prom alone, that’s why I’m asking you, Dad.”
Matt normally sings “You’re so wonderful, you’re the best. I want to pose for a picture in my tux next to you in your lovely dress.” But in Mom, Will You Go To The Prom With Me? the words are “I’ve been rejected by every girl I know, I can’t find one to join me at the prom, so now as a last desperate attempt, I’m going to ask my Mom.”
Matt normally sings “You’re so wonderful, you’re the best. I want to pose for a picture in my tux next to you in your lovely dress.” But in Mommy, Will You Go To The Prom With Me? the words are “I’ve been rejected by every girl I know, I can’t think of any other, so now as a last desperate attempt, I am asking my Mother.
Matt normally sings “You’re so wonderful, you’re the best. I want to pose for a picture in my tux next to you in your lovely dress.” But in Sister, Will You Go To The Prom With Me? the words are “I’ve been rejected by every single girl on my list, and now as a last desperate attempt, I’m gonna ask my Sis.”

Noises from Other People

Happy Birthday Jeremy (You’re Getting Old) – You can hear a woman in the background, probably from a T.V.

Persons mentioned in songs that are neither name songs nor songs about people

Unexplored Topics

Here are a few trends I’ve noticed where I haven’t written down the specific track:

  • When Matt talks about wanting to kiss a girl
  • When Matt calls someone a stupid idiot
  • When Matt uses the word “situation” in a song
  • Songs about Death
